What is a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies can happen for many reasons. Here are the most common:

  • Tooth decay or cavities – sharp, throbbing, or constant pain due to untreated tooth decay
  • Sports injury – dental injury usually from contact sports resulting in teeth being knocked out
  • Auto accident – auto accidents can lead to severe damage and broken teeth
  • Home accident – often this is the case of adults or children falling into a table or other hard surface

Other types of dental emergencies include:

  • Dental trauma
  • Missing teeth
  • Dental infections, which expose the tooth’s nerve
  • Missing fillings or crowns
  • TMJ or lockjaw, a condition that makes it painful to open and close your mouth

There’s no way to predict when dental emergencies are going to happen. If you do experience an emergency, it is best to immediately call a dentist who has the knowledge and training to handle the emergency and provide the proper dental care.
